Diethyl (phenylacetyl) Malonate Uses: Diethyl(phenylacetyl)malonate(New BMK oil) CAS 20320-59-6 is intermediates for organic synthesis. Diethyl phenylmalonate was used in the synthesis of felbamate-d4 (2-phenyl-1,3-propanediol-l,l,3,3-d4 dicarbamate) using lithium aluminum deuteride.

Diethyl (phenylacetyl) Malonate Preparation

The anhydrous ethanol co-evaporated with diethyl phthalate and sodium metal is added dropwise to the mixture of diethyl malonate, carbon tetrachloride and magnesium, heating starts the reaction, and controlling the temperature to make the reaction gentle. 
Then add anhydrous diethyl ether, heat for 1h, add the diethyl ether solution of phenylacetyl chloride (add slowly, so as not to make the reaction too intense). 
After the reaction is completed, cool and add water, separate the oil layer, and evaporate the ether under reduced pressure to obtain diethyl phenyllevulinate.

Unlike other malonic esters that are derived via malonic ester synthesis, diethyl phenylmalonate is typically indirectly derived via a Claisen condensation with diethyl oxalate and ethyl phenylacetate followed by decarbonylation. This indirect method is often used because aryl halides are relatively weaker electrophiles than alkyl halides and thus poorly alkylate diethyl malonate.Methods using Caesium carbonate and copper(I) iodide have been developed to overcome this difficulty however.
